Meet Matthew McCully: A Canadian Author & Creator

Welcome to the digital home of my creative projects and personal storytelling, coming to you from Quebec, Canada. This is where I share the narratives that matter, from the quiet inspiration of my family’s sugar bush to the pages of my fiction. Consider this your invitation into the world of a Canadian author and creator, where every project is a piece of my story.

Our Creative Mission & Story

My mission is to share authentic, Canadian-rooted stories and experiences. I believe in the power of narrative that springs from a specific place and perspective. For me, that place is the Eastern Townships of Quebec, a landscape that shapes my identity and fuels my imagination. Everything I create, from personal video projects to works of fiction, is an attempt to capture a slice of life from this unique corner of the world and explore the universal themes that connect us all.

Why I Create

I create because I have stories within me that demand to be told. It’s a compulsion to make sense of my experiences, to celebrate my heritage, and to connect with others. Creativity isn’t a separate hobby; it’s woven into the fabric of daily life, whether I’m tapping maple trees, developing a plot, or framing a shot. I create to document, to explore, and to share a genuine piece of my world.

The Stories I Want to Tell

The stories I gravitate towards are those of principle, curiosity, and quiet adventure. I’m drawn to narratives that examine personal ethics, the bonds of family, and the subtle magic of the everyday. This focus is perfectly exemplified in the genesis of the Sugar Shack Sessions, born directly from the rhythms of our family sugar bush. It’s about finding the extraordinary narrative in my own backyard and believing those local, personal stories have a wider resonance.

Our Projects: From Page to Screen

My creative output spans different mediums, each representing a facet of my interests. On one hand, there’s the structured, imaginative world of fiction; on the other, the spontaneous, documentary-style capture of real life. These projects are deeply connected, both springing from the same well of personal experience and creative curiosity.

My Debut Novel

My first major foray into published fiction is the novel Matthew McCully and the Matter of Principle. This book is a labour of love and a central pillar of my creative identity. It allows me to explore themes of morality, choice, and consequence through the lens of narrative fiction, providing a different kind of storytelling depth than my video projects. It represents my belief in the enduring power of a good book to entertain and provoke thought.

The Sugar Shack Sessions

In contrast to the novel, the Sugar Shack Sessions are a raw, heartfelt video series that documents life, music, and conversation in my family’s sugar shack. This project is authenticity in motion. It captures the laughter, challenges, and music of a truly Canadian tradition. The Sessions are where my personal story and creative mission visibly merge, offering an unfiltered window into the experiences that inspire my other work.

My Editorial Voice & Approach

When you read my content, you’re getting a direct line to my perspective. I strive for a voice that is conversational, informed, and rooted in firsthand experience. An Informed, Personal Take

My content is built on a foundation of lived experience. I write and create from a place of having done the work—written the book, filmed the series, lived the Quebec country life. This allows me to offer an informed, personal take that goes beyond surface-level commentary. I share what I’ve actually learned, not what I’ve merely researched, giving my audience a trusted and relatable source of insight.
